A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, a sunburst Or, charged with a Greek cross Sanguine, with horizontal arm bearing at center a Korean Taeguk (Scarlet at top, Blue at base) between two arrowheads points up of the second. Attached below the shield a scroll, doubled back, inscribed SOLACE TO THE SUFFERING in Black.
The two arrowheads symbolize the assault landings in the South Pacific by some elements of the former organization, the 40th Medical Battalion. The taeguk, from the flag of Korea, represents Korean service by the predecessor organization. The Greek cross is a symbol of aid and assistance. The gold sun and blue background allude to California, the Golden State, and to the Pacific Ocean. Maroon is a color representative of the Army Medical Department, to which the former unit was assigned.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 40th Medical Battalion on 19 December 1976. It was redesignated for the 240th Support Battalion with the description and symbolism revised effective 1 June 1987.
